With The Voice UK back on our screens, one of its celebrity coaches has been speaking about the future of music, suggesting that technology will have such an impact on the industry that the superstar of the future will be “a machine”.
The Black Eyed Peas’ singer is one of four coaches again in the current series – its 11th – alongside Anne-Marie, Olly Murs and Sir Tom Jones. The quartet judge the contestants not by their looks, personalities, stage presence or dance routines, but only by their vocal ability.
The US artist is the only judge to have been on the show since it first landed on BBC One in 2012, and he has also been a judge of another talent contest in the US. Alter Ego sees will.i.am, Alanis Morissette and Grimes act as judges, while contestants sing backstage in headsets and their digital avatars perform on stage.
In a new interview with

inews, the musician has said that, in the future, our popstars might not be human at all. “In the future, I would bet that tomorrow’s Michael Jackson is not a person. It’s a machine that will be able to talk to millions of people at the same time," he said. "Tomorrow’s big superstar will be able to make custom songs Michael Jackson wasn’t able to record. Tomorrow’s superstar is going to be perfect.”
Speaking to inews about how technology is already playing a bigger and bigger part in everyday lives, he continued: “You think the people you’re talking to on Instagram and Twitter are people all the time? And they’re gonna get more and more sophisticated, to the point where bots can sing songs and have a physical presence. They’ll be able to express themselves. You’ll be able to FaceTime and video conference with them.”
He added: “We live in a world where people already want to alter themselves to look like a filter. We’ve been so infiltrated by technology that the filter is playing you.”
The Voice UK airs at 8pm, Saturdays on ITV.
