PANAMA CITY BEACH — Peak tourist season might be over, but that does not mean the fun stops on the Beach.
According to Jayna Leach, senior vice president of Visit Panama City Beach, there still are a variety of upcoming events slated for the area this year to not only give residents something fun to do, but also continue the economic benefits of tourism through the offseason.
“Hosting activities after peak season plays a large part in driving year-round visitation to Panama City Beach,” Leach wrote in an email. “Attracting visitors during this time of year helps to boost the economy outside of the busier summer months and allows us to highlight PCB as a year-round destination.”

While 2021 was the busiest year of tourism in the city’s history, with Leach describing it as “incredible,” bed-tax collections so far this year show that 2022 might soon take that title.

Leach noted tax revenues for PCB in June and July of this year were 6% higher than the same months last year. Taxes of $6,961,728 were collected in June 2022 compared with $6,713,928 in June 2021, and $8,333,347 in taxes were collected in July 2022 compared with $7,880,513 in July 2021. These months were easily the busiest so far in 2022.
Bed taxes, or tourist development taxes, are lodging fees placed on short-term rentals in Panama City Beach. They also are indicators of how busy the Beach is during a given time.
Information from Visit PCB states more than $21.251 million in bed taxes were collected this year from January to July. This is about $1.16 million more than during the same time in 2021.
“After experiencing a fantastic tourism year in 2021, we are thrilled to continue on the path toward another record year,” Leach wrote. “This continued boom despite inflation tells us that families are ready to travel again, and that they are choosing Panama City Beach because it has everything they’re looking for.”
