He may be young, but fellow coaches Gwen Stefani, Camila Cabello and John Legend believe a small-town Michigan teen could be Blake Shelton’s secret weapon on this season of “The Voice.”
15-year old Brayden Lape is from Grass Lake, which is between Jackson and Ann Arbor. His Blind Audition on the hit NBC reality singing competition aired towards the end of night two of the first round of auditions on Tuesday, Sept. 20.

“Grass Lake, Michigan is a really small town. Everybody knows everybody. We had, like, 98 kids in my grade. I play basketball, football and baseball,” Lape said before his audition.
“Ever since he’s been a little boy he’s excelled at everything he did,” his father added. “He kind of started picking up the guitar, learning it on his own and singing in the room with the door closed and finally singing in front of us.”
Lape performed “This Town” by Niall Horan. Coach Blake Shelton was the only one of the four to turn a chair for him, but once the other coaches learned how old Lape was, they felt they may have made a mistake.
“That explains a lot for me. Your age. Now, I have super regret for not pressing my button,” Gwen Stefani said.
“I was like Blake, you need this person on your team,” coach Camila Cabello added. “It’s like kind of, singer-songwriter folk, but with a pop sensibility. I’m telling you, this guy sounds like he could be on the radio. Blake, this guy’s your secret weapon.”
“I’m crying and regretful that I didn’t turn. You’re going to blow it and I’m going to steal him,” added Stefani.
“I may have an ace in the whole with this kid,” Shelton said. “I can’t believe I’m the only person who turned around. This kid is a singer-songwriter. He’s folk. He’s pop. He’s a great addition to my team is what he is.”
“You got yourself a Tom Brady on your team,” added Legend.
