Internal Twitter Data Reveals Crypto Tweeting Trends – HYPEBEAST

Twitter has become the primary platform for crypto discussion on the internet, and internal data from the company reveals just how many people are joining the conversation.
The company shared with HYPEBEAST exclusively that there have been over 1 billion tweets about crypto since 2020, with 299 million of them being tweets made this past year alone. The most retweeted tweets in that time include this Bitcoin giveaway from YouTuber Mr. Beast; this Super Bowl ad from crypto exchange FTX; this Christmas Ethereum giveaway from notwoways founder Callux; this Dogecoin rallying call from Dogecoin Rise; and this tweet from Elon Musk allowing buyers to pay for Teslas with Bitcoin.
Since 2020, the top crypto co-mentioned topics include business and finance, investing, NFTs, Bitcoin, Ethereum, cryptocurrency exchanges, digital asset industry, Binance Coin, Dogecoin and tech personalities. From 2020 to 2021, there were about six times more tweets about crypto than ever before — a testament to its recent mainstream boom.
The top countries where most #CryptoTwitter conversations have taken place since 2020 include the U.S., India, Indonesia, Turkey, Bangladesh, U.K., Japan, Nigeria, Vietnam and The Philippines. The top crypto-related hashtags from January 1, 2021, to March 2, 2022 included #nft, #bitcoin, #nfts, #crypto, #bsc, #nftgiveaway, #btc, #eth, #nftcommunity and #airdrop.
The data also showcases the rise of NFTs and the growth of discussion about NFTs on Twitter. There have been around 375 million tweets about NFTs from January 2021 to date, and the top 10 influencers in the space include the world’s largest crypto exchange Binance, its blockchain software Binance Chain, its CEO Changpeng Zhao, Elon Musk, cryptocurrency trading app Coinbase, Mr. Beast, cryptocurrency aggregator CoinMarketCap, NFT marketplace OpenSea, cryptocurrency exchange and the Solana blockchain.
Twitter has embraced the wide range of crypto enthusiasts that inhabit its platform by allowing creators to get tipped in Bitcoin, display their NFTs as a profile picture (referred to in the community as PFPs) and link their crypto wallets to Twitter for easier authentication. The company also introduced Spaces in 2020, a live audio chatroom feature that has since expanded the crypto dialogue, and in September it began testing out Communities, which gives people a dedicated place to connect and share ideas on a given topic.
“We see a thriving crypto community on Twitter — from NFT creators to cryptocurrency investors,” said Esther Crawford, the platform’s creator product lead. “Since Twitter is one of the first places many people experience crypto for the first time, we see an opportunity to make it easier for people to participate in the promise of web3 directly on the platforms they already use.”
While Twitter has become a launching point for crypto discussion, there remains a gender divide in the number of crypto users. According to the data, women made up only 32% of the tweets about crypto from January 2021 to now, despite contributing significantly to the NFT industry through investments, NFT education and more. In response, Twitter launched its first-ever female-led NFT Community called “Women in NFTs” to provide a space for female expansion and connection in web3.
In other news, Twitter now allows users to tip creators in Ethereum.
