The fall of the Berlin Wall more than 30 years ago symbolized hope for cooperation with Moscow. Russia’s war in Ukraine has now ushered in an era of confrontation. And the rise of new barriers of steel, concrete and barbed wire being built by the West. The war has given European Union countries a new impetus to fortify their borders with Russia and its ally Belarus. Mostly to stop migration orchestrated by Moscow and Minsk. Finland plans fences on parts of its 1,340-kilometer (830-mile) border with Russia. Polish soldiers have begun laying razor wire on the border with Russian exclave Kaliningrad.
In the past, the mere sight of ritual dancers from a secret society in Zimbabwe would have sent shivers down the spine of many outsiders. But on a recent night, dozens of people in the Harare township of Mufakose squeezed together for a closer look. UNESCO included the dance on its Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list. The performers of the Gule Wamkulu, or “great barefoot dance,” are increasingly opening to the public. These efforts are a part of an engagement drive that seeks to rehabilitate the group’s reputation in society. Some unsettling reports have come out over the years and they are trying to counter that narrative.
The Pac-12 still should dominate attention this week with its two marquee matchups even as the conference’s College Football Playoff hopes have taken a hit. Fourth-ranked and undefeated TCU is already in the Big 12 championship game. The 10-0 Horned Frogs have to keep winning if they want to be in the four-team College Football Playoff. They play Saturday at defending league champion Baylor, which has to win out and get a lot of help to get back in the title game. No. 19 Kansas State can join TCU in the Big 12 title game with a win at West Virginia, combined with a loss by Texas at Kansas. The Big 12 could still have all 10 of its teams get bowl eligible.
The Los Angeles Kings visit the Vancouver Canucks after Trevor Moore recorded a hat trick in the Kings’ 3-1 win against the Edmonton Oilers.
Michigan hosts Illinois on Saturday and will face a desperate Illini team that squandered their West Division lead with back-to-back losses. The Wolverines must guard against looking ahead to next week’s showdown with No. 2 Ohio State for the East title. Iowa is at Minnesota for a West Division knockout game between two of the four teams tied for first place. Wisconsin linebacker Nick Herbig is on a tear heading into the game at Nebraska. He has five sacks the past two weeks since missing the Purdue game.

Below the turquoise waters off the coast of Australia is one of the world’s natural wonders, an underwater rainbow jungle teeming with life that scientists say is showing some of the clearest signs yet of climate change. The Great Barrier Reef, battered but not broken by climate change impacts, is inspiring hope and worry alike as researchers race to understand how it can survive a warming world. Authorities are trying to buy the reef time by combining ancient knowledge with new technology. They are studying coral reproduction in hopes to accelerate regrowth and adapt it to handle hotter and rougher seas.
Turkey’s state-run news agency says security forces have detained a suspect wanted in connection with the deadly bombing in Istanbul. The operation was carried out in a Turkish-controlled area in northwestern Syria. Other suspects detained following the bombing will appear before court officials on Thursday to face possible charges or be released from custody. The wanted suspect was caught late Wednesday by Turkish police in the Syrian city of Azaz which is under the control of the Turkey-back opposition. The Sri Lankan government is being urged to drop charges against two protest leaders detained for more than three months following the anti-government demonstrations that engulfed the island nation earlier this year. Amnesty International also renewed its call for Sri Lanka to repeal the harsh, civil war-era Prevention of Terrorism Act under which the two protest leaders are being held. Wasantha Mudalige and Galwewa Siridhamma, both university student leaders, have been detained for more than 90 days under the PTA. In recent weeks, opposition groups and rights activists have been staging frequent protests to demand the release of two leaders and end to a government crackdown on anti-government demonstrations over economic hardships.
Authorities say two people have died after a multi-story building under construction collapsed on a neighbor’s home on the outskirts of Kenyan capital Nairobi. Three other people have been rescued alive from the family home that was next to the collapsed building located in Ruaka suburb. The early morning collapse on Thursday is the second such incident this week as construction authorities warn of unpermitted buildings coming up in the city and its outskirts. A multi-story building collapsed Tuesday in the city and construction workers were trapped inside. Building collapses are common in Nairobi where housing is in high demand and unscrupulous developers often bypass regulations.
A Ukrainian regional governor says a Russian missile strike has hit Ukraine’s southern Odesa region for the first time in weeks. The governor said Thursday that an infrastructure target was hit and warned about the threat of a “massive missile barrage on the entire territory of Ukraine.” Marchenko’s statement comes amid media reports about explosions in other parts of Ukraine and regional governors urging residents to stay in bomb shelters as the threat of missile strikes persists. Thursday’s blast follows the huge barrage of Russian strikes on Tuesday that also resulted in a missile strike hitting Poland.
