GAYLORD, MI — Footage taken by a local businessman captured the storm that would form a devastating tornado that ripped through Gaylord on Friday afternoon.
As of Saturday, May 21, police have attributed at least 44 injuries and two fatalities to the tornado that struck the Northern Michigan community of around 4,200 people at about 3:45 p.m. Friday.

The fast-moving tornado struck southwest of Gaylord before moving northeast several miles and produced baseball-sized hail, the National Weather Service reported.
MLive received drone footage from David Pickelhaupt, owner of Hillman Small Engine & Outdoor Power Sports Repair in Hillman, who was documenting the events.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has declared a state of emergency for the Gaylord area. Otsego County has also declared a local state of emergency.
In a post on the Facebook page of Pickelhaupt’s business, Gaylord residents were told free labor and in-field service to generators and other needed items was available. Hillman’s can be reached 24/7 by calling 810-887-7494.
The Michigan State Police announced in an tweet Saturday that a hotline had been set up for inquiries about missing persons. The number for the hotline is 989-705-3780.
