On the Thursday edition of “Closer Look,” Darl Champion, a personal injury and wrongful death attorney at The Champion Firm, rebuts recent claims against the personal injury industry by startup Mighty Law.
Last week, Mighty Law CEO and founder Joshua Schwadron criticized “billboard lawyers” and large personal injury firms for price gouging and lack of transparency with clients. According to Champion — who said that Mighty operates at a higher price point than a number of other firms, despite claiming not to — these narratives paint an inaccurate portrait of personal injury lawyers and have led to justified indignation within the industry.
Such claims by Mighty promote problematic conflation between the cost and value of legal services, according to Champion, who described the group as a “settlement mill firm.”
“You need a lawyer who is negotiating a settlement for you in the shadow of the courthouse, not in the shadow of a conference room … Who’s going to have more sway — somebody that knows you have a local Georgia attorney who has trial experience and is willing to go to court if you don’t get a fair settlement or somebody that’s sitting in a conference room in Connecticut?” Champion said. “If you have an attorney who … knows how to properly value cases and is willing to actually fight for you and to do what’s necessary, you’re going to get a much better result than a settlement mill firm that is just shuffling some papers around for you.”
